What’s Really on Your Leadership Menu?

Picture this: You’re sitting in your fourth meeting of the day, desperately trying to focus on the quarterly reports, while your brain feels like it’s wading through treacle. Sound familiar? Well, what if I told you the solution might not be in your inbox, but in your lunch box?

As a leadership coach, I’ve seen countless brilliant minds running on empty – or worse, running on the wrong fuel altogether. It’s like putting diesel in a petrol engine and wondering why things aren’t quite clicking. Today, I want to chat about something that might seem obvious but is often overlooked in the hustle and bustle of leadership life: what we’re feeding our magnificent thinking machines.

Here’s a shocking little nugget for you: your brain, that marvellous organ that makes up just 2% of your body weight, greedily gobbles up about 20% of your daily energy. It’s rather like having a teenage son who empties the fridge after football practice – except this hungry teenager is responsible for every decision you make, every creative solution you devise, and every brilliant strategy you conjure up.

The other day, I was working with a CEO who couldn’t understand why he hit a mental wall every afternoon around 3 PM. “I’m running on coffee and determination,” he proudly declared. Well, determination is brilliant, but it’s not exactly brain food, is it? After a few tweaks to his daily menu (and yes, he did have to give up his beloved triple-shot afternoon espresso), he was sharp as a tack right through to evening.

So, what’s on the menu for a high-performing brain? Let’s break it down:

The Premium Fuel List

  1. Omega-3s: Your Brain’s Best Mate Think of these as your brain’s version of premium petrol. Found in fatty fish, walnuts, and chia seeds, they’re absolute champions at keeping your cognitive engine purring along nicely. Not keen on fish? No worries – there are plenty of alternatives that won’t make your office smell like a fishmonger’s.
  2. Antioxidants: The Bodyguards These little warriors protect your brain cells from wearing out. Found in berries, dark chocolate (yes, chocolate – I’ll pause while you celebrate), and leafy greens. Think of them as your brain’s personal security detail.
  3. B Vitamins: The Energy Squad These are like your brain’s power station workers, keeping the lights on and everything running smoothly. You’ll find them in whole grains, eggs, and leafy greens (yes, greens again – they’re showing off a bit, aren’t they?).

The Hydration Station

Here’s a fun fact that might make you reach for your water bottle: your brain is about 75% water. That means even mild dehydration can turn your sharp, decisive leadership brain into something resembling a slightly damp sponge. And no, unfortunately, six cups of coffee don’t count as hydration (sorry, fellow coffee enthusiasts!).

The Real-World Impact

One of my clients, a brilliant startup founder, was practically living on energy drinks and granola bars. She was making decisions that would affect dozens of employees and millions in investment, all while running on what was essentially liquid sugar and hope. We revamped her fuel strategy, and within weeks, her team noticed the difference. “It’s like someone turned up the brightness,” she told me. “Everything’s clearer.”

Your Brain-Boosting Challenge

Ready for a little experiment? Here’s what I propose:

  1. Start your day with a proper brain-boosting breakfast (think eggs on whole-grain toast with a side of spinach – your brain’s version of a power suit)
  2. Keep a water bottle on your desk (bonus points if it’s got measurements to keep you honest)
  3. Swap one processed snack for nuts or berries
  4. Take proper lunch breaks (eating over your keyboard while answering emails isn’t a power move, it’s a missed opportunity)

The Bottom Line

Leadership isn’t just about strategy, vision, and execution – it’s about having the mental energy and clarity to make it all happen. You wouldn’t expect a Formula 1 car to win races on low-grade fuel, so why expect your brain to perform at its best without proper nutrition?
